Lionel Messi appproves Barcelona's new goal keeper signing
FC Barcelona looks on during the Liga match between FC Barcelona and Real Sociedad at Camp Nou on March 07, 2020 in Barcelona, Spain.
As LionelMessi approaches his final years at Barcelona, the club attempt to fulfill his every desire in order to make his final seasons as successful as possible.
Barcelona have the fear of losing the Argentine superstar to the existing clause in his contract that allows him to leave at the end of a season if he so chooses. Out of fear and respect, the Catalans are attempting to solve every problem that Leo finds at the club including transfer requests.
Neto joined Barca last year in exchange for Jasper Cillessen in the hopes of securing the minutes as Marc-Andre ter Stegen‘s backup. Sadly for the Brazilian, Ter Stegen’s phenomenal form has pushed Quique Setien to sideline Neto
The 30-year-old, after securing only 4 appearances for Barca, is tipped to be leaving the Camp Nou this summer with plenty of offers coming in. The side’s B squad goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, was regarded by many as the natural successor to Neto’s role but the Board finds that he needs more time to develop.
For this reason, the club has decided to approach a former La Masia player, Andre Onana, currently the no. 1 choice at Ajax. The Cameroonian international knows the Barca way and could potentially make a return this summer. His price tag of 40 million euros is said to be the only thing that’s keeping Barca from making an approach.
The 24-year-old has been regarded by many as one of the best goalkeepers and has many more years to develop further. The Catalan side are reluctant to spend 40m on a backup goalkeeper but Messi has already given his approval for the signing.
Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag recently accepted that Onana could potentially leave despite his disapproval but no official negotiations have started with any club.
“Andre is very important and obviously, we do not want to lose him. But it is true that last year we reached an agreement on the steps that we would have to take if the correct club arrives and with the correct ammount. As far as I know, no concrete offers have been made.” the coach said.
Onana has himself been very vocal about wanting a bigger challenge and aspirations of winning European trophies
Would Onana be the right fit? How should Barca approach this signing?
